PBRPC area agency on aging

As with any demographic, older adults play vital roles in their communities, from economic impact, business owners and workforce to community involvement and experiential mentoring contributions. Yet, staying connected to their communities becomes more difficult as they age.

To that end, the Area Agency on Aging of the Permian Basin Regional Planning Commission (AAAPB) was proud to host a “Senior Celebration” this spring to bring together a committee of community resources, businesses, philanthropists and other individuals to serve and honor these local, valuable individuals.

The Midland County Horseshoe Arena included almost six hours of entertainment, including free lunch, music, dancing, exhibitor booths, bingo, door prizes and more. Held during Older Americans Month, the celebration honored the contributions of the Permian Basin’s older population and showcased our area’s “Senior Friendly” environment. And we can take time this summer to celebrate as well, highlighted by August 21st as National Senior Citizens Day, declared as such by President Ronald Reagan in 1988.
“This was the return of our annual Senior Celebration Event, thanks to the enthusiasm and contribution of staff’s time and effort. Everyone had a wonderful time,” said Alma Montes with AAAPB. “We are thankful to have all the attendees and those who took the time and effort to bring their loved ones to the event.”

Community socialization

The Senior Celebration’s importance goes beyond a simple party. “Stars” of the Permian Basin are honored at the event by presenting awards, nominated by the community, to individuals and organizations that, through outstanding or innovative service, allow older individuals to celebrate long-term life.
“Many of our older population may feel forgotten and this event is a way to honor them. We encourage them to come out and enjoy some entertainment, food and socialization,” said Montes.

Community familiarization

The Senior Celebration is also designed as a thoughtful opportunity for individuals to learn what the Permian Basin offers them regarding services, clubs, volunteering opportunities, social services and more. To that end, exhibitors set up booths for the event to provide information on their resources for seniors.

“Senior Celebration provides “one-stop-shop” opportunities to visit with the various vendor booths about services ranging from home health, aesthetic rejuvenation, physical therapy, community resources, volunteer opportunities, Medicare advocacy, counseling services and more,” said Montes.

Care for seniors

Involvement and support by multiple community groups in the planning and implementation of the Senior Celebration highlights the dedication many different entities have toward the Permian Basin’s older population.

“Senior Celebration is 100% based on community support and involvement, and word of mouth is still the leading method of spreading information for the event,” said Montes. “We love and care about our seniors in the Permian Basin!”
